Dr. Khatuna Burkadze, a Professor at Caucasus University and Director of Foreign Policy Studies at the Georgian think tank Geocase, delivered a speech on the role of AI in higher education at the international conference “Education, Technology and Innovation.”
Prof. Dr. Khatuna Burkadze highlighted: “The definition of AI indicates that its introduction in developing a new education policy is possible. AI is a key instrument for an accelerated digital transformation enabling users to make systematized, consistent, and timely decisions. AI can bring innovation to higher education institutions by making education more accessible and improving the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process.
The introduction of artificial intelligence in higher education institutions will contribute to the implementation of the following tasks: 1) simplifying the teaching-learning process, especially remotely; 2) developing the concept of a smart assistant, which implies assistance to both professors and students in finding information, processing data, and performing routine functions (this assistance should be compliance with academic standards); 3) creating educational programs and courses with the focus on individual needs; 4) facilitating the implementation of administrative tasks in higher education institutions timely”.
“At the same time, because of the growth of the scope and capabilities of AI, the need to create an appropriate framework has become obvious. The ethical and legal framework can ensure the development of the concept of reliable AI and clarify the lawful purposes of AI systems in key fields, including education policy. It can define legal grounds to avoid the unlawful usage of AI. Simultaneously, human rights should be respected and protected by the creators and users of AI applications. Also, AI systems should be provided with objective information. By processing such data, they can make the right conclusions and assist humans to effectively perform different tasks, especially automatic routine objectives in higher education institutions,” said Prof. Dr. Khatuna Burkadze.
