Prof. Dr. Khatuna Burkadze, Director of Foreign Policy Studies at "Geocase" said: “The decision of Georgian Dream to suspend accession talks with the European Union is unconstitutional. It infringes on our country's national interests.According to Article 78 of the Constitution of Georgia, the state bodies should take all measures within the scope of their competences to ensure the full integration of Georgia into the European Union. Contrary to this article, the government has impeded Georgia’s integration into the EU”.
“The aforementioned decision is changing the foreign policy priorities enshrined in the Constitution of Georgia and is contrary to the will of the majority of the Georgian population. It deprives us of the opportunity gained through years of effort, which implies achieving our historical and strategic goal - to become a full-fledged member of the European family. At the same time, European integration is our civilizational choice, which is the path to more development, progress and stability. The current situation in the country poses a serious threat to our statehood and all its components, taking into account political, economic, social and, of course, security factors. The use of forceful, disproportionate methods against peaceful protesters violates fundamental freedoms and rights, including international norms for peaceful assembly. The investigative authorities should investigate the facts of illegal and disproportionate use of force against peaceful demonstrators and media representatives. We must ensure the implementation of our national tasks in a peaceful way, which implies creating opportunities for the citizens of Georgia and not limiting or depriving them,” mentioned Prof. Dr. Khatuna Burkadze.
“Furthermore, according to the statement of the U.S. Department of State, because of the Georgian Dream’s anti-democratic actions, the United States has suspended its strategic partnership with Georgia. We should return to our Euro-Atlantic path and restore strategic relations with the U.S. and European partners,” highlighted Prof. Dr. Khatuna Burkadze.
